Quick Tips for Wooing an Application-Based Podcast
As a business owner, we sure have some days and some mindset muck and on and on, don't we? Here's why I'm excited today. The muck did not stop me from getting this beauty of a newsletter out to you! Can we just take a moment to cheer for goals met.
Now let's talk about you and making you a podcast rockstar!
You’ve found a podcast you are just itching to be on. It’s the good kind of shiny object (yes, I believe in such a thing). This particular podcast is application-based which is making your palms sweat a bit.
There are many ways to get on podcasts.
- Application-Based: You apply to be a guest.
- Send a Podcast One Sheet (POS): The POS (this strikes me as funny) contains information about you, your experience, the topics that you can cover, and a little more detail on what a host can expect if you come on their show. Note: If you need one, Canva has some templates you can alter and use or you can always tip toe into Creative Market and see what they have there.
- Direct Message Based: Newer podcasts will often just put a post in a group and say they are looking for guests and request that you DM for information.
- Direct Reach Out: Typically, this is what services will do for you but I know some very ambitious souls who do this themselves. It’s not for the faint of heart.
No matter which method a podcast is using, you want to be prepared and put your best foot forward. Today, we are going to talk about application-based podcasts like mine.
The purpose of having an application is to help easily review a potential guest’s expertise, topics, and fit for the podcast. Filling out these applications properly is critical to getting the “Yes! I want to feature you” email.
You want to put the majority of your effort into these areas:
- The topic(s): Make sure that you list out a complete topic. One- or two-word answers will likely get you a “pass” quite quickly. The host needs to understand exactly what you are looking to discuss on their show. After all, this is their pride and joy!
- Your experience: Don’t skimp here. Hosts want to know that you are an expert and not someone coming on the show who is going to talk about “quackery” as one of my favorite physicians calls it. I believe in holistic health very strongly (IAWP Certified Wellness Coach here) but I also know some of what’s out there is complete hogwash.
Some hosts may dive even deeper looking for references and much more.
If this is making your palms sweat more, don’t fret! You can prepare for this. I do recommend putting together the POS to have on hand. From there, you should be able to rock any application that comes your way because the info is all going to be there to pick from.
I challenge you to find one podcast to pitch this week! Reply and let me know all about it.
I believe in you!
